    Question:
I have just purchased a 450 Rancher chainsaw. When I unpacked it, I saw that it had a sticker saying that a spark arrestor may be required. (Duh! Of course a spark arrestor is required!) What I can't find out (at least without taking the saw apart) is whether this model actually HAS a spark arrestor. (And if so, where it is, how to clean it, &c.)

Does it have one, or do I need to buy one and install it? And if so, where? Or should I just take the saw back to the store since I can't legally use it without a spark arrestor?

      James,

You don't need to take the Model 450 apart to see the Spark arrestor.

Look at the muffler from the front, and now look at the top surface of the muffler directly under the brake handle. You can move the brake handle either forward or back to get a better look at the top surface of  the muffler.

If you see a small pan head screw on that surface, then the Spark arrestor is installed. If you don't see this pan head screw then I would guess the screen is missing. If you want to remove the spark arrestor to see If it clean or has carbon built up in it, then just remove the pan head screw and with a pair of needle nose pliers grab the edge of the arrestor screen, Located right where the pan head screw was mounted, and give it a wiggle and pull straight to the left and it will slide out. To install just be careful to push it back into the slot carefully so it doesn't bend or damage the screen.

Its a good idea to inspect it periodically because I have seen these screens get plugged with carbon.

I hope the above information helps, if you need more information then please let me know,

That's it! Thanks. Would be nice if they put something about it in the manual, instead of 20+ pages of "Chainsaws for Dummies" :-)

      James,

I hope you found the Spark Arrestor, and I just read the OM (operating Manual) for the Model 450, and I guess the problem is that the heading for "Mufflers" is sort of cryptic in that they give you a reference to "Spark Arrestor (13)".

This is a reference to there pictures in the beginning of the OM manual. I have enlarged a copy of the picture, see attached file.

Again, I hope this helps !
