    Question:
I have a 445e chainsaw and the chain brake will not work right. It won't let me put the clutch cover back on and it keeps the chain from moving. Right now I cannot get the clutch cover to fit over the clutch like it should and it does not engage the chain brake mechanism. Will I have to take it to a dealer to get this fixed?

Hi, thanks for using Answer Army.

It sounds like the chain brake is engaged and will have to be released in order to get the cover back on.  If you can not release the brake by pulling the handle back, then the clutch will need to be removed along with the clutch drum.  Next the cover will need to be replaced back on and then release the brake.  Please let your dealer check it out if you feel uncomfortable performing these actions.  Below you can find a link to the servicing dealer locator and again thank you for using Answer Army.

I had a similar problem after buying a Husqvarna saw online (meaning it came unassembled -- not from a dealer).  Discovered the problem was a round plastic white spacer that was preventing the case from closing tight and also preventing the chain brake mechanism from working correctly.

No idea if this is what's wrong with your saw though doesn't hurt to check.  Make sure there are no plastic spacers inside your clutch case (where the bar holding prongs are)!  These are meant to prevent jiggle during shipping and should be removed!

I had discovered the same problem with the chain break being engaged. The option to see my dealer is low on my list as they usually are not open when I need their help. After searching on the internet for an extended period of time I diagnosed the problem and determined I could reset the chain break with a pair of channel locks. I could not find this fix anywhere on your manuals, this sort of thing shows how disinterested your company is in really helping your customer.

It would be more helpful for your readers if you would put actual instructions on why something happens and how to fix it. I could not release the break with the handle as I had to replace the chain.

If you want to provide some photos on how to do this it would be helpful. Telling people to take it to your dealer is of no help to me.

Thanks for letting us know there is a way to fix this. Just a little more information would have been a big help. Seems to be a problem that occurs often though. You're right, the company could offer a reaonable solution to this problem.

      Mike,

Here is another possible solution, and was posted last year under FAQ's, I have not tried this personally but it sounds like it should work: . Also, I think the trick here is to get the brake handle to engage the mechanism at the top front of the cover, and then using the handle to disengage the brake band, A third hand from a friend may be helpful, and don't force it, if it doesn't go back on, go to an Authorized service center.(Copied from previous FAQ)

Product support - How to reinstall the chain brake on my chainsaw?

How do I reinstall the chain brake on my chainsaw if it will not fit?

If the side cover is difficult to reinstall, most likely the chain brake is in the "engaged" position.

The easiest way to reinstall the cover is to follow the directions below (no special tools are needed).

      1. Remove the bar and chain, this will make the process easier.
      2. Place the cover onto to the saw, the back of the cover will stick up, due to the brake band sitting on top of the clutch drum/ drive sprocket.
      3. Install the bar nuts finger tight only.
      4. Move the front hand guard forward, place your hand on the part of the cover that overlaps the bottom part of the hand guard, while applying pressure move the guard back releasing the chain brake.

If further assistance is needed, we recommend you contact your local authorized service dealer.

Mike, You may already have your problem resolved, I'm Not sure. But since I was removing my clutch covers today on my two 455 Ranchers to install New rim drive sprockets in both saws, I was thinking about you with your clutch cover. I remembered Not to engage the brake handle and then try removing the clutch cover. In the previous answer, above paragraph I realized the real key to getting the clutch cover back on is to leave the bar and chain off, as stated in Step 1, above. Focus on getting the brake handle's plastic tabs to engage the clutch cover, you may need to move the brake handle back and forth just a little as you carefully engage the clutch cover. Then with the clutch cover partially engaged to the handle, and while holding the clutch cover to the saw, see If you can pull back on the brake handle to disengage the brake band and spring that is inside the clutch cover. If that works then you should be able to just remove the clutch cover a second time, and then put the bar and chain back on and everything back together. I hope this helps. Oh, by the way my new rim sprocket systems work like a champ on my 455 ranchers, and only took about 10 minutes to install on both saws, its a great system.
