    Question:
Simple question! I bought a husqvarna 136 chainsaw for my husband at an auction with a 14" bar. He needs to sharpen it. What size file does he need to get?

Kim, The Husqvarna 136 is capable of using a 3/8 pitch or .325 pitch chain, this will determine which sharpening set to get. If you look at the bar, and stamped into the bar you can still read the numbers, It should be marked 3/8 or .325. If the bar is scratched up and you can't read the numbers you will have to measure the pitch, which is not too difficult but has to be accurate since they are close in dimensions. On the straight part of the chain looking at one cutting link which has a rivet in it, and measure with a ruler to the next cutting tooth rivet. It should be either 3/4 " or a little less than 5/8 ". The pitch is simply half that distance so 3/4 divided by 2 = 3/8 or little less than 5/8 divided by 2 = .325 pitch.

Its probably the 3/8 pitch but anyhow If its 3/8 pitch use a 5/32 round file and if its a .325 pitch use a 3/16 round file to sharpen each tooth. You will also need a flat file to file down the rakers periodically which sets your depth of cut, I like the complete set which includes a round file, flat file, and gauge for checking sharpening angled and depth of cut.

A great site to help with purchasing sharpening tools as well as tutorals on how to properly sharpen a chain is "Oregonchain.com".

I hope the above information helps.
