I had the same problem. I tried a 3 hr. charge too. One start and the battery was dead again..........that charge is too fast. I then went and got the $ 8 Float charger at Harbor Freight and Tools..........charged it for 48 hrs. (it has a built in cut-off to prevent over charging and just tops the battery off) . Put it back in the mower and it has started every time now for a month . Fires up fast as well. Keep in mind a float charger can be left on all the time (more for the winter months) and is different than a trickle charger.
Batteries Plus store is where I took my battery first..........they said it was highly unlikely that a new battery won't hold a charge...........they checked mine and said it looked fine and read ok. They even said its rare that they ever get a new battery that won't hold a charge. Chances are good the battery is fine but as I mentioned above you need a Float charger on it for a few days and nights. Again this solved my problem because when I used faster 3 hr. chargers my battery would drain to dead again by the next day.
My question is then how can a low battery or not hold a load cause the engine to start when you don't have a key in the ignition? My orginal question said, "So I trickle charged for about 3 hours and the voltage was at 12v. Installed back on the mower when I put the red wire on the battery it was trying to start even though the key was not in mower." This would mean to me that I have a short in it some where. I have contacted my local service center and he will be looking at it next week.
Hi James, thanks for using Answer Army. I would recommend taking it to your dealer. You may have a battery that won't hold a charge. Your dealer will be able to check and test your battery, and put it under load. They will also take care of the warranty claim. Again thanks for using Answer Army.
