Thank you for contacting the AnswerARMY.

The purge bulb on this unit is part of the carburetor and is not offered separately. The carburetor would need to be purchased as an assembly we strongly recommend you have a dealer do this repair for you.

The solution is incorrect. The bolb is part of the pump assembley and can not be replaced. HOWEVER... you do NOT have to replace the carborator. If you can picture a garden sprinkler system (a Y with a blub on it and a 3 inch brass shaft_ then you have a good idea what the part looks like. Looking at the unit (with the filter in front of you) the bulb is on yout left. Folluw from the bulb to the carborator and you will see the spring with the shaft inside of it. Now look on the right side of the filter and you will see a screw head where the end of the shaft is - remove the screw, disconnect the fuel lines ( they will more than likely be stuck so you will need to gently grab the hose over the nipple and gently twist the hose to loosen it) then remove the hoses, pull the part out. Take that part to your local repair shop and the part should be around $15.

I'd like to amplify Dan Oliver's very helpful answer. His disassembly instructions are very good, and he is correct about taking the part that you end up with to a repair shop. It will consist of the primer bulb, which is attached to a plastic housing with two separate connectors for the fuel lines that you removed (bulb attached to Y-shaped plastic housing). In addition, in the middle of the Y with the bulb is the brass shaft and spring, and, at the end of the shaft on the other side of the carburetor, a small piece of plastic and the screw that came out of the shaft.

I took the piece to the repair shop and, as I had guessed, was told that they didn't have the part I needed. It is simply part of the entire carburetor unit that Poulan-Weedeater sells for $25+. The part number for the carb itself is PWE-577135901, and I was going to order it and remove the Y-shaped assembly as a solution of last resort.

Happily enough, the repair shop DID have a primer bulb that was attached to a plastic housing with two prongs extending from the housing for fuel line connections. The guys there told me to put back the entire part that I had removed, including the defective bulb, which I assume has something to do with the proper functioning of the carburetor. Instead of reconnecting the fuel lines to the non-functioning bulb by means of the Y-connectors, though, they said to connect the fuel lines to the new part. I had to get a longer line for one of the connections, but was able to connect the new part to the fuel lines...and, after priming, the weedeater WORKS! The new bulb and plastic housing cost around $6.00.

One thing to remember in connecting the new part: It will only work properly if it is connected right. Try connecting one fuel line to a connector on the housing, and then pushing the bulb. If the bulb fills with gas and shoots gasoline out the other connector, it is connected properly. If pumping the bulb doesn't fill it with gas, remove the fuel line you connected and connect it to the other connector and pump again.
