    Question:
I have a brand new Husqvarna walk behind real wheel drive self propelled lawn mower model HU800HW. I just bought it last week and it works quite well overall but a couple of questions:

    1. The gears for the wheels made a grinding sound on the left side. I took it apart and can see the large gear (inside the wheel) and the smaller gear (connected to the drive unit) were not quite meshing together properly when the wheel spins (these 2 gears always stay locked together normally). I swapped the left and right wheels and the noise went away for the most part. The dealer I bought it from said there are different part numbers for the left and right wheels and maybe the wrong wheel was put on the left side. Is that possible?

    2. The gears in question 1 above do not have ANY grease on them. They are totally dry. Should they have grease? And if so, what kind? The dealer I bought them from thought they should have some grease on them and recommended regular automotive grease although some people in forum online said I should use high temperature/pressure lithium grease. What do you recommend for these gears?

    3. The mower drive wheels lock up when trying to pull the mower backwards more than a couple of feet. Is this a feature to prevent it from rolling back onto the person mowing? It makes it very difficult to mow since half the time with a push mower (even self-propelled) you have to pull it backwards to maneuver it around objects. This could be a deal breaker for this mower - I'd really hate to return it. Maybe tell the R&D folks to fix this in next year's model if it can't be disabled. Is there a way to disable this feature?

    4. This is more of a comment - the side discharge chute that I had to wait to receive in the mail should either come with the mower or at least be available at the place of purchase (dealer) optionally. Many people complained about this on the forums - if you don't want to bag or mulch (which doesn't work with taller grass) - you can't use the mower until you get the side discharge chute. It would be better if you didn't make folks who bought the mower have to wait for that part if they know that is how they are going to be using the mower.

Thank you for contacting the AnswerARMY.

It is upsetting that you have had this experience with your mower.

The wheels are the same for each side, there is no difference on the units I looked up, it is possible there is a tread variation on some of the various models but the gear area is the same.

The gears are intended to be dry, if lubrication is needed use a dry lube such as graphite.

The drive wheels locking up this sounds like the belt is dragging causing the transmission to engage, double check your belt adjustment to make sure the belt does not drag.

The discharge chute should be available for purchase from local dealers, the reason we do not include it is most people mulch. Also using it as a gift once you register is an incentive to the consumer to register the mower.

I had the same problem with a brand new HU725BBC. Here is the fix.

      1-remove the rear  wheels.

2-remove the gear attached to wheels.

3-put in spacers (washers) between the gear and the wheel.

What this does is position that gear on the wheels closer to the gear they are supposed to mesh with. That is the ONLY fix for an inherent design flaw.

The gear grinding seems to be an issue across other models as well. I just bought an HU800AWD today and had to take the first one back because the two gears weren't meshing at all and were actually slipping! The second one I got was not near as bad until I started mowing with it and I found that at low speeds, it seems to slip like the first one did. Thanks Timothy, I will try the washer trick and see if it helps.
