I had the same thing happen - this is the most convoluted recoil design I have ever seen. This unit has very few hours and very dissatisfied with the performance. I actually thought I was buying quality when I purchased the 128. Reliable starting is just about one of the most important things about a piece of equipment and then I see a response about having to see a dealer for a repair because of the potential in the spring - then eliminate one and use metal parts!! Easy repair is about the second most important thing about a piece of equipment. This is what I paid for? an inferior designed product that I need to drive 30 minutes away to have it repaired!!

These internal parts of the recoil is made of a heavy duty plastic to help keep the heat away from the starter assembly. The recoil spring is metal of course, and to me it just sounds like it would need to be carefully disassembled and rewound. Making sure that the spring stays in the slot by not completely removing the screw that holds it in place. If the recoil spring end that holds on to the plastic wheel then you may need to get a complete starter assembly. Most of these can be sent out already would tight so all you would have to do is install and rewind the rope.
I hope this helps.
nice canned and uninformative answer. now how about you admit this is a problem with 128ld and tell your customers how to fix this problem!
I also have the same problem. I bought the 223L trimmer 45 days ago and now the pull cord will not work correctly. It was completely stuck outside the assembly. I took it apart and loosened the bolt holding the assembly and it recoiled back up properly. Put the trimmer back together and after 2 pulls, it happened again. I am not pulling hard either. What is the deal with this? What are my options? I have several husqvarna products, but a $250 weed eater should not mess up after 45 days.
I have this exact same issue. The trimmer is literally 38 days old. I took the recoil mechanism appart and discovered I think that the piece of plastic where the outer most spring inserts appears to be boogered up and no longer holds the spring correctly. I know that the op manual says not to pull the sting all the way out and i assume i pulled it too far and damaged the piece of plastic. That being said, I didn't pull it overly hard and this should never happen with a good design anyway (why plastic?). Lowe's wont take it back since its older than 30 days. Will Husqvarna just send me the whole back piece since its still under warranty or will I have to take it to the service location?
I have the same problem, The recoil mechanism is the problem. The rope is not the problem. I have noticed that This mechanism has been redesigned - so there is a problem with this mechanism. I looked for information for replacement parts and could not find any.
This unit was purchased at Lows, Model 128LD, 952711953, 108499, 2476101717, SN 10155N702739. These are every number off the unit. What is the replacement part numbers - and what is the price for these.
I am ready to through this unit in the trash and never buy another Husqvarna brand item ever again. !!!
husqvarna crap. get rid of it. i have a troy built 5 years . no trouble great machine
I thinked bought Poulan after this review http://jonsguide.org/best-4-cycle-weed-eater/ , but in last momen bought 128 LD .I was trimming around the yard when it sounded like it had a broke reed valve and quit running. After doing some checking, this unit does not have reed valves. It tries to start but will not stay running.. Found a small hole in air filter, melted hole. Also found a broken spark plug.
Thing I have done. 1. checked exhaust and cleaned the spark screen, 2. rebuilt the carburetor. 3. Ran compression test, 95psi. 4. Replaced spark plug. 5. disassembled output side of engine and check to see if the spacing on coil was correct and that no play in fan/flywheel. When pulling through to start, there is a pop back through the carburetor and exhaust. Starts up low speed and acts like it not getting fuel and or timing is off. I am lost.
