    Question:
Comparing a Husqvarna GT52XLS and a GT52XLSi. The XLS has a Kawasaki engine and the XLSi has a Briggs. The XLS has a HyroGear transmission and the XLSi has a Tuff Torq transmission. Which one has the electric locking rear axle? How does this work? What else is different between the two models. I'm willing to spend the extra $ for the locking rear axle if available. Otherwise, I will get stuck. The dollar difference is not significant to me.

According to IPL the XLSi with the Tuff Torq transmission has the electric differential lock. Normally the rear axle has what appears to be limited slip setup. This is much like automobile where they spider gears to allow one to turn more than the other in turns. With a locking differential this slipping is no longer allowed when locked. It provide better traction on straight pulls or if one wheel is slipping in mud while the other is on solid ground by making axle turn as if they one solid axle. The drawback is that turning is harder as mower will try to go straight and will slide the front wheels as you attempt a turn while it is engaged.

As for exactly how Tuff Torq locks the differential electrically I don't know as they currently don't the Tufftorq K66ELD transmission IPL listed on their website. I do see that Husqvarna diagrams shows a switch much similar to the PTO switch for the operator to use. I don't have enough experience with Tuff Torq brand to know if they are better, worse, or about same as Hydrogear.

Personally the Kawasaki engine is usually the better of the two engines.

The rest of the mower appears to the same at least from parts list view.
