    Question:
I purchased the 775EX or HU 775H mower. I recently experienced heavy white smoke and oil coming out of the muffler area. There was plenty of oil in the system. I have tried to research suggestions and I have read if the unit was turned on its side or has been in the rain (heavy soaking) this can occur. The suggestion was to remove the muffler, clean it out and then replace the oil completely. Do you agee? Would this be the cause for teh smoke and oil from muffler? What do you suggest to remedy the situation. Please advise, thanks!

It is more likely it is overfilled with oil. There is several ways this can happen. First check your oil level it going be registering overfilled.

1> The operator overfilled the engine oil.

2> A leaky carburetor.  This can cause fuel to leak into the engine crankcase where the oil is normally at. This happens the oil needs changing after leaky carburetor has been repaired or replaced. Most leaky carburetors are traced to a bad needle seat or trash holding the needle valve opening partially.

3> engine has been on it side.

4> or could be more serious engine problems.

Kinda leaning away from the rain idea as these engine air cleaner are tight in this regard.

Most times here in the shop it is a carburetor problem.

You don't need to remove the muffler. Once the source of the oil overfill problem is corrected any oil that is in the muffler will burn off when 5 to 15 minutes operation once the muffler reaches its operating temperature.
