Question:
Husqvarna 7021R Won't Start
I am unable to get my lawn mover to run more than a couple seconds at a time. See the details section for more info.
Details:
Hi, I bought a new Huqvarna mower in May. I've only used it a handful of times, as it's been pretty dry this summer. It ran OK at first, but I noticed it starting stalling frequently after using it a couple times. The problem seemed to be the air filter, because as soon as I removed the filter and started it back up, it ran like a champ.
I bought a new air filter today and replaced it. With the brand new air filter, it would not start. Now, when I remove the filter, it will run for a couple seconds and then stall out. The only other things I changed are that I added more gas and checked the oil. Soo.. I'm pretty much stuck at this point. I tried following the instructions for a flooded engine but haven't got it to run for more than 5 seconds. Any ideas??
Thanks,
Andrew
Answer
It sounds to me like a plugged up carburetor. When the air filter gets dirty it can't let enough air into the engine and that's probably why it was running rough and then good as soon as you took the air filter off. But in the process of doing that some dirt or something probably got into the carburetor and isn't allowing the gas to be pumped. The few seconds that it does run it's just running off the fuel from the prime.
The cure is to take the carburetor off and clean it out.

Hi, are there instructions somewhere on how to remove/clean the carburator? I'm pretty handy but have not worked on engines before.

Unfortunately I am not aware of any instructions from Husqvarna on how to do that. Your local dealer should be able to take care of it pretty easily.

I am Running into the same problem that you are with the same mower. I have called lowes and they told me it would take 3 weeks unless i took the mower to the place to get it fixed myself.

Hi Eric,
So what are you going to do?

I was told after calling around and everything that if you try to fix the mower at all it voids the warranty. I was also told that if its the carb that its not a husqvarna problem and that you have to take it to a certified place that repairs the maker of the engine. and it would be repaired by them under warranty.

Hey, just an update. I called Husqvarna support when I got home from work today. After I explained my situation, they said I had done all the troubleshooting they could do over the phone. So they basically just pointed me to 2 local repair shops. One was still open so I took the mower over to them. The guy fired it up in the parking lot and it worked. I looked like a pretty big idiot. We let it run for a while, and stopped it and restarted it a few times. Best the guy could tell me is maybe there was some dirt in the line or in carb and maybe the bumps drive over shook it loose.
Anyway.. after feeling pretty dumb, I brought it home and succesfully mowed my lawn. So the best advice I can give at this point is if you're having this problem, take your mower for a spin around town. Make sure to go up and down some hills and hit some nice bumps. Maybe it'll magically work!

Hi everyone. Happy spring.
Today, I am trying to mow for the 1st time this season. I'm getting the same exact problem again with fresh gas and ample oil.
Any more ideas what is wrong and what a long term fix would be?

So I think I'm just a little impatient. I went back and just kept doing the following:
1. put on choke
2. start engine, and wait for it to fail
3. pull on the starter 4 or 5 times
4. repeat
After about 6 to 8 times of cycling through this, it finally started and stayed on. I let it run for a minute or so, stopped it, and then was able to easily start it without even using the choke.
So it's running fine now. Could anyone help me understand why this occured? There's probably a logical explanation that I just do not understand yet.

Thank you for the information! I found their Ethanol video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX6CFlQbUXI
Glad I watched it, it's very informative. I will have to make sure next time I get gas to pay more attention.

Hi Vic. My mower is actually ok.. I think it was just more getting used to the typical start up sequence. This is what I have to do each time I go to start my mower:
I'm not sure if this is a normal startup sequence or not, but it seems to work for me. I just got used to it and it works fine for me now. Try doing this, and maybe you'll be ok.
