    Question:
I just bought a PoulanPro Lawn Mower Model PR160N21RH (961380018) at Costco in New Brunswick, Canada. There is a large gap between the Honda engine and the deck of the mower. Other reviewers of lawn mowers on line suggest this gap should be filled in with something or grass and dust will blow up around the motor and continously clog the air filter. Is this recommmended?
    Details:

The engine is mounted to the mower deck by three bolts and there is a gap of about 1/2 inch all around the bottom of the motor between the motor and the deck.  I can actually look through under the motor.

    Thank you for contacting AnswerARMY.

I contacted the engineers and was told this air gap is intentional. The design of the air gap is similar to the design on our lawn tractors with vented decks. This air gap allows air to be drawn in to aid in mowing functions and as a side benefit aids in colling the engine as we are moving air across the oil pan.

Debris coming from this area should not be of concern and should not happen except under rare conditions, remember this is an air intake system.

I just mowed the lawn for the first time - don't give those engineers any bonuses and tell them to actually start a mower and cut some grass.  An enclosed area with a spinning blade that can fill a rear bag, will also shot grass out of any gap left between the motor and mower deck.  And this debris does get sucked into the air filter.

Can you please ask them if it is acceptable to fill the gap between the motor and mower deck with a high-heat resistant caulking.

        Thank You,

        AG
