    Question:
I just bought a DRT900H. It idles fine, runs good just driving to the garden. As soon as you start to till the governor swings back and forth rapidly from idle to wide open throttle. The engine surges drastically the entire time I'm tilling. I brought it back to the dealer and they said nothing is wrong. They obviously didn't take it out and actually put it under load. I saw a previous post by Ken Theis that is the same as what I'm experiencing. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it. As it appears my dealer is just going to blow me off and I'm going to have to fix this myself. Thanks for any and all help. Terry

Try applying a little choke and see if it smooths out, If it does then the carburetor fuel mixture is too lean. It may require some rework of the carburetor to fix this including jet re-sizing which most shop won't do as it is considered tampering by the EPA of approved carburetor setup by someone other than the factory engineers.

As you said the shop probably didn't field test your tiller as most don't have area to do so That one advantage I have over some of my competitors here in that I have 6 acres to test equipment on.

Thanks for your response. I did try it with the choke in various positions and it didn't make any difference. I too assumed it was too lean. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm a 30 year gas engine drivability tech for Ford so gas engines and carbs are nothing new for me. But when it comes to small engines and governors I'm out of my area of expertise.

Then it could very be the static governor adjustment. I am not familiar with the Honda GCL160-LAMHAB that is list in the parts manual so someone else maybe of better help. The Honda website didn't list this engine for some reason.

I was just about to do some reading on governor operation and adjustments. I agree with you as this probably being a governor issue  more that an air fuel ratio issue. Thanks for your help! Terry
