    Question:
Brand new saw with gas tank half full? Just purchased what I thought was a brand new 450 rancher from Lowe's. I get the saw home and take it out of the box. Then I see carbon on exhaust and black gooey residue on the bar that had came from the sprocket area. The bar oil chamber was completely dry and the fuel tank about half fuel. Has this happened to anyone else what does it really mean? Should I save myself the headache of worrying about all the what ifs and just return the saw?

Personally I would return it as it has already been used and returned for some reason. This is especially if you paid new full price for it. If was a factory recondition saw it would be clean and not dirty with fuel. Shipping equipment fuel and oil is disallowed by most carriers. There is an exception here as oil in original containers are allowed. Fuel itself is a hazardous material that is banned by most carriers like UPS unless properly package.

Now if purchased as a discounted item as it was used then it would be a return item and repaired or one those I just need the saw a short time but don't want to pay for it deals. But I would be leary of any 2 cycle product that has not checked and guaranteed to be in good working order. I say this as a tech that knows an improperly operated 2 cycle equipment can be destroyed rather quickly especially when straight gassed.

Just too many inconfident operators out there. Here is a good example: Operator buys SP 4 cycle mower, unboxes it, fuels it, and start cutting grass then the mower throws a rod. What customer didn't do was put oil in the crankcase; oil put in afterwards. On top of that somehow he manage to bend the blade in the short time ran. This is what I found on a brand mower that brought from Walmart for parts but I knew what I was getting as I can still sell the good slightly used parts.

I do see a few RECON saws in my shop from time to time and they are just as good as one that brand new as they are fully restored not counting cosmetic damage. In these case I would not be afraid to buy one as long as I know it is a RECON and am paying a lower price.

The chainsaw should be brand new and since I paid retail $399.00 -10% Military discount. I totally agree about the refurbished models but in this case I wanted brand new. Today I will return the saw and hopefully they have one brand new and untouched. Another thing I found strange there was no scrench in the box. Tried searching online for what's in the box for a Rancher 450 but could not find a list of components. I wonder now what else I am missing...   Thanks Eugene for the reply!

          Avery,

There should a scrench in the box of the new saw or at least mine came with one. It sent to me directly from the Husqvarna warehouse Christmas 2014. Nice Christmas present.

Contents of box should be a narrow kerf .325 bar and chain, scabbard (bar cover), scrench, powerhead (saw motor), and a quick start owners manual. These are what were in my box.

      Avery,

I agree with Eugene, If it was purchased as a New chainsaw, then I would definitely take it back. A brand New chainsaw should be perfectly pristine, clean, and No evidence of fuel, oil, or anything like what you stated. So definitely return it, and get one in an un-opened box.
