    Question:
I purchased a NEW 460 Rancher chain saw on 6-9-18. It ran awesome right out of the box for about 6 hours. then after a fueling it would not start and when I went to open the fuel cap it sprayed all the fuel out and nearly emptied the fuel tank. Anything I can do before I take it back to the store I purchased it from?

      Christopher,

Yes - there are a few things that you can try. First, I have to ask a couple of questions based on your symptom description. Did you remember to mix the fuel and oil to the correct ratio 50:1 or use a premix ? If the answer is yes, than we can move on to the next possible solution, However If the answer is No and you did not mix the oil into the fuel per the manual, then you probably straight gassed the engine, and this is definitely not good, and hope you can return the saw, for another one.

Assuming you had the correct fuel mix, and onto one more question concerning the fuel cap spraying fuel out of the tank, this is Not unusual and also is not a problem. You should always open a fuel tank or a fuel can slowly and let the air escape. I have seen both fuel cans and fuel tanks pressurize. Were you outside on a warm day in the sun ? This will most defintely pressurize the tank, and again is normal just be careful slowly opening the cap before fully opening it.

If You had the correct fuel mix, then it is possible that the engine has flooded or vapor locked, so here are a couple of things to try: Put the Chainsaw control switch in the normal run position (Not choke position) and hold the Throttle control all the way in or Wide Open Throttle, Pull on the Starter cord 4 -5 times with good quick pulls, and it may start If the engine was flooded. Let it Idle a little If it does start, and then pull on the throttle, you may get a little cloud of smoke and this should clear in a few seconds and will also confirm that the engine was flooded but is now clear. If it does Not start fhen perform, the next step.

Engine still does Not start, look at the muffler, Is it all Wet like its been leaking gas and flooded ? Then remove the spark plug, leave the spark plug off to the side, you can Inspect that too, and see If it looks wet, and dry it off with a paper towel. Now, with the spark plug out, turn the chainsaw upside down and pull on the starter cord, did you get a spray of fuel out of the spark pkug hole ? Then pull a couple more times with the plug out, you can put a rag over the spark plug hole, and see If any more fuel comes out. Then re-install the spark plug, following your manuals directions for Installation, and Install the spark plug wire & boot. Try starting the engine following the manuals Cold start Instructions using the choke. Only pull a couple of times in the choke position, and you should hear a little pop like its trying to start, then move the control switch to the run position, and pull one or two times and it should be running.

I hope this helps and please let me know on this forumn If it worked for you,

      Christopher,

      Just a quick follow-up.

Did you get the chainsaw returned to the store or Did you get it running ?

      Curious,
