    Question:
Just bought a YTA24V48 FAST Tractor. This is an automatic transmission not hydrostatic. Going thru setup and got to purging transmission but found it impossible to following the instructions. However, before getting into all the details let me first ask if this is even necessary on the automatic transmission? From some of my reading, I get the impression the purging is for the hydrostatic transmissions and are not necessary for automatics. Is this true?

If not true, here is my problem. The Instructions start off as:
    1. Place tractor safely on a level surface... with engine off and parking brake set.
    2. Disengage transmission by placing free-wheel control in disengaged position. Here's where the problem occurs. The free-wheel control will not stay in the disengaged position while parking brake is engaged. If I take the parking brake off I can then use the free-wheel control to disengage the transmission but as soon as I try to set parking brake the free-wheel transmission control engages.

So I am left with the choice of ignoring the parking brake instructions altogether and just leave transmission disengaged and parking brake off the whole time (since to do further steps in purging requires releasing parking brake anyway). So if the automatic transmission also needs to be purged. it only logical to skip messing with parking brake... Right?

Finally, I have a question concerning the free-wheel control. On my old riding mower, this control had shoulder on the control that fitted into a slot in a keyhole that prevented it from returning to the engaged position. This new Husqvarna has the keyhole and the control that moves front to back but no shoulder on the control. The manual and diagram on the mower indicate the control having a shoulder. What's up with that?

This is a fairly new style of transmission but the General Transmission RS800 is more mechanical than automatic. It use sliding sheaves to vary the speed of the input shaft. This system is similar to the MTD system but way more complicated. The sliding sheave system is also similar to those use on ATVs. It is no need to purge it. As for the free wheel control the reason there is no latch up place like the hydros is that the transmission is design to auto reset it when the brake/clutch is depressed.

This is my understanding of operation from reading the so called service manual which don't even have any on the internal workings.

Thanks for quick reply I thought that might be the answer.  I hope being new won't be a problem.  I researched and chose this based on reviews etc, but when I went to buy one this is what they had.  I wish the manuals were updated along with the machine... but hey I'm a programmer and I am often guilty or releasing new programs with updating the docs.  :-) Thanks again for the reply that eases my mind.

I have the same mower.  It loses power when going uphill and I have to keep taking my foot off the pedal and pressing it back down to continue forward progress.  I tried to go thru purge process outlined in the same out of date manual that was referenced in the last post and had the same questions.  Now I'm wondering how I fix the loss of power problem.

Did you ever fix the problem with your mower not going uphill very well? I'm having the same problem.

Just went through the same thing with my new Craftsman 20 HP vTwin 42" 90th anniversary model.  Spent a lot of time trying to figure out if the quick reference guide was for a different mower because you cannot do the purge operation.  Then I thought the washer must be missing on the free wheel shaft because it is shown on the machine decal as well as the downloaded owners manual. There was no mention of the procedure applying only to Hydrostatic mowers.  A real documentation messup!
