      Melissa,

An often asked question, but for the horsepower of the engine on a Model 440, a 16" bar is the largest recommended.

I have a couple 435's just 5 cc's in displacement smaller, and they are great trim saws for cutting large limbs, but are definitely Not for bucking or logging or falling large diameter trees.

I usually use a 72 cc engine similar to a Model 372, for logging with a 24" bar, and I can cut logs all day long 20" in diameter and larger,  So limb with a smaller trim saw, and log with a larger chainsaw would be my recommendation.

      I hope this helps,

      Melissa.

Just a quick follow-up, I reviewed the owners manual for a Model 435/440 and Husqvarna's OM states that you can Install an 18" .325 pitch bar and chain as the Maxium size.

As Karla said the max bar length recommended is 18". For comparison the Poulan PP4218  (42cc) which is basically the same saw as the 440 (40.9cc) comes with the 18" bar and if a 20" is put on it won't able unable to keep it properly oiled and it will struggles to pull the full 20" when buried in a cut. Even then you need to be using the narrow kerf setup which reduces load and I still would think it would have problems.

Personally I would not anything larger then 18" preferably 16" on this saw.
