    Question:
I was going to buy a Husqvarna YTH22V46 Lawn Tractor from Lowe's, but all 9 of them have been stored outdoors all summer.

So I lifted the hood, unscrewed the gas cap, and looked into the gas tank of each one.

Every one of them had about 1/4" of clear, odorless liquid in the bottom of the tank that looks like water.

So my question is: Is liquid in the gas tank of a brand new never-used mower normal (e.g some sort of preservative? Or is it rainwater?

I read every page of the user's manual but there is no mention whatsoever about a liquid in the gas tank of a new mower. I would think if would have been mentioned if it was supposed to be there.

If it's rainwater, does that mean the engine has already been damaged, or is it not a problem... and if so, what is the recommended procedure to deal with the water?

    Thank you.

As far as I know there should be no combustible liquid in the tank as this would be safety problem during shipment in case of accidental spill.  I would ask a Husqvarna dealer about this as water would not normally get into the fuel tank even when the mowers are stored outdoors. It maybe something that have been added at the Lowe's store.

According to the user manual, the engine is shipped with oil in it (which is combustible), so I couldn't entirely rule out the possibility that the gas tank was shipped from the factory with some sort of preservative liquid in it.  Or maybe Lowe's added something to the tank because they knew they were going to leave the tractors outdoors.  But none of the Lowe's employees I spoke with know anything about it.

For this particular model riding mower (YTH22V46), there is a possible entry point at the top of the gas tank for rainwater to get inside.  There's a rubber hose entering the top of the tank through a plastic fitting located in a ~1 inch "well" at the top of the tank.  The plastic fitting does not appear to sealed water-tight: it wiggles when the rubber hose is moved. I'm guessing it's some sort of vapor control.  It's quite plausible that rainwater collects in the "well" and then drips down into the tank.  There's obviously a lot of water getting on the engine: rust is obvious in various places.

Are there any YTH22V46 owners out there who store their mower outdoors in the rain?  Have you ever had an issue with water in the gas tank?

I'm going to find out if there's a Husqvarna dealer within reasonable driving range who still has the YTH22V46 in stock, and what kind of deal he'd be willing to make.
