    Question:
Bought a new 460 Rancher saw last year and love it. At time of purchase also got a extra chain, a #18 husky. This chain really cuts but can't find and specs for it. I don't even know if its a proper chain for this saw. Need to know angle for sharpening.

      Mark,

The best angle is  about 25 degrees, and most Husqvarna chains are factory sharpened to 25 degrees. Some individuals like them to be a little more aggressive and increase the angle to 30 degrees but I would not recommed anything more. Also any thing less than 25 degrees and you will be pushing much harder on the chainsaw to get it to cut.

      I hope this helps,

Also as far as which chain will fit your model 460, there are many different chains that will fit, If its a Husqvarna chain there will be a number stamped on the drive link (the part which rides inside the groove of the bar, either pull up on the chain if its attached to the bar or remove the chain from the bar and you should see this number on each link), If you put an "H" in front of the number, like ie. "H80", that will be the Husqvarna number for that chain. But the most important is that the chain matches the bar, and stenciled on the tailstock of the bar, you will find three numbers. (Drive Links "DL", Pitch, and Gauge). On a typical Husqvarna 20" bar the bar will be labeled ie. 72 DL, 3/8, and .050, (DL, Pitch and gauge). The chain "Must" match the bar with these three numbers!

PS. I am Not a Husqvarna Representative or an Authorized Repair, just an experimental chainsaw person.

My saw is a 20 inch and the number on the drive link is 18, what I can not find is any husky site or dealer that can tell me anything about this chain. The saw came with a #48 installed and this chain cuts like s--t compared to the #18, just want to make sure this chain is safe to run on my saw

      Mark,

I just re-read your post and saw that you said it was a 18 inch, so then your numbers would typically be 72 DL, .325 pitch, and .050 gauge.

Also, a great site to do some reading and explainations about chains is /pdf/homeowner/consumer_home.htm

      Again, I hope this helps!

      Mark,

Thanks for getting back to me, the #18 doesn't sound familar to me but the #48 does. Oregon chain makes an H18 chain so I suspect that may be what you have, and the H48 is definitely a Husqvarna chain but from what I can tell it looks like the gauge is .058, so my question to you is your bar an .058 ? Remember, the chain has to match the numbers on the bar ( DL, pitch, and gauge).

Also, some Manufacturers of chains like "Oregon", will have their name on the chain, others like "Husqvarna" wil have their logo "H", so you may be able to locate that info on the chain.

In addition, If you ever change both the bar and chain (ie. Combination bar and chain), be very careful to make sure that it matches the Pitch of the drive sprocket inside the chainsaw. The drive sprocket is sometimes labeled or stamped on the drum with the pitch size or a part number which can be cross referenced to the pitch. The Husqvarna Model 460, and also some of their other chainsaws were made to accomodate either a .325 pitch or a 3/8 pitch. To summarize, everything must match, and you should have no problem. (Drive sprocket  = Pitch), (Bar =  Pitch, gauge, DL), and (Chain = Pitch, gauge, DL).

Oh, I also didn't get into types of chain but there are many different types like skip chain, safety chain or anti-kickback chain, etc. etc. I suspect that the H18 chain was a different type, not sure what kind of chain, However the H48 chain is a professional chain, has no Kickback protection, and is an aggressive chain, so not sure why the difference in your results.

If I can help with any additional information, Please let me know!

spare chain came in a factory Husqvarna box, one side is stamped 18 other side is stamped husky, and yes saw has 3/8 pitch and .058 or 1.5mm, 20 inch bar.

      Mark,

Just one more thought about the #18 chain, which could be a 81 upside down, and Husqvarna does make an H81 chain for your chainsaw. The H81 chain is a safety chain or anti-kickback, and less aggressive, its also a .058 gauge 3/8 pitch chain.

So that might be the difference, and why they cut totally different which would make alot of sense.

      Again, I hope this helps!
