    Question:
Wiggly auger hub, 1830HV snow thrower.

The auger hub on our (one year old) 1830HV snow thrower is so loosely in position that it can easily be moved by hand, up and down, through an inch or more of play. Our dealer said that it might be ok like that, but that some models have a flange holding the auger steady in the center, and that possibly our machine could be retrofitted to add this support. We are concerned.. is this looseness the way it is supposed to be? What if anything is wrong? (The first thing we did was to check all the shear bolts. They are all ok.) What should we do?

New models with the cast iron gearbox do have a support bracket for the auger gearbox assembly. That part # is 585 10 90-04 SUPPORT GEARBOX – GREY. You could ask your dealer what they think about using that bracket. The gearbox is different on yours however,  but I don't see why the bracket could not be used. Most replacement parts are very reasonably priced. With a one year old machine like yours and still under warranty, seems prudent to let the dealer look into the possible excessive play or movement in your auger hub assembly also.

We did consult our dealer.. he was not certain whether or not the play is excessive,

Besides the shear bolts there are bolts that secure the auger shaft to the bearing housing. Did you check those bolts? You can

also check the auger ball bearing housings on each end for tightness. If all those are tight has the dealer seen  your machine in person? Sometimes a mechanic can spot the simplest thing easily by looking at the machine.
