    Question:
I have Husqvarna 435 chainsaw less than a year old and probably has less than 10 hrs of use. While using the other day, the chain locked up and stalled. I pulled the cover off and had a hard time as the chain brake seems to be locked up. I am trying to get the cover back on , but once done, I can't get the band to slide over the clutch wheel. I hope I didn't make a mistake buying this saw as this cover has to come off to change the chain. What gives?

      Jack,

I think what may have happened is your chain brake became engaged, this is a safety feature and did exactly what it was suppose to do, and thats is what I believe stopped the chain from moving. At that point all you would have had to do is pull back on the brake handle and it would have released the brake, and you could have continued cutting. The brake has an inertia brake so that If you dropped the saw tip down and it struck something then it will engage, infact that is exactly how to test your chain brake.

However, I believe the next thing you did was shut the saw down, and tried to remove the clutch cover with not knowing the chain brake was engaged. This is not good, since your Instruction manual will tell you Not to remove the clutch cover with the brake engaged.

So here is what you can try, If you have not already done so, remove the bar and chain and set it to the side. You may need an assistant to help with this since you almost need three hands but it is not difficult. Have someone just hold the saw on a bench to steady the saw, now with your left hand on the brake release hold it forward, and with your right hand hold the clutch cover and start to engage the bar bolts but do not try to push the cover all the way on. Tip the top front of the cover towards the brake handle mechanism, you are trying to engage the brake mechanism to the handle, which has three little tabs in it. If you can hold that engaged pull back with your left hand to disengage the brake.

If this worked, then you will be able to push the cover on the rest of the way and you have disengage the brake band. Then leaving the brake handle disengaged, remove the cover, Install the bar and chain and  clutch cover, and your back in bussiness. Oh, after you get it back together, test the brake handle a couple of times by pushing it forward and make sure the chain is locked and pulling it back to make sure its disengaged and the chain is free to travel.

If you can't get the cover engaged this way, I would recommend you take the chainsaw to an authorized Husqvarna repair center, it should only take them two minutes to fix the problem and check your chain brake is working properly.

I hope the above information helps!
