    Question:
I've seen many questions asked on this subject but no answers. Model YTH22V46; manual says to remove the lower dash cover when changing the oil. I see the cover and I see the fastener that needs to be removed. the fastener appears to have a round hole in its center. I don't have a round allen wrench and my best guess is if I'd ask for one at Lowe's, they won't have one and think that I'm crazy. Someone has to know how to remove it or it's a conspiracy to make you take the thing to a dealer to have the oil changed.

I haven't seen screw in question but it is common on many Husqvarna equipment to use torq bit (six point star) screws as for the size I would would in the order of T20 to T30 size. A regular allen type wrench will only slip if tried.

It might also be the Christmas Tree screw as picture below which is just a push in type plastic retainer and you just pull it out.

I am responding because I've struggled with the same question on my YTH24K48 mower.  The operator's manual says "Remove fastener from left lower dash cover", with no further explanation.  There is a diagram that seems to show that the fastener can be pulled straight out.  I was able to verify in the parts manual that the fastener is a X-mas tree clip (part no. 532 44 51-43).  However, it does not simply pull out, as the manual suggests.  I tried pulling with needle-nosed pliers, and no go.  Maybe I will try pulling a bit more forcefully, now that I know that it is just a xmas tree style fastener.

However, I was able to remove the dash covers without removing the fastener.  Grab the covers near where they attach to the chassis (the vertical edge of the cover closest to the back of the tractor), and pull upwards -- there is maybe 1/4" of give, as the tabs in the plastic cover slide up the tapered slots in the chassis.  Then pull the covers forward, away from the chassis.  Because the slots are tapered, if you have lifted the tabs high enough, they should be able to come out of the slots with some coaxing.  Try to be gently, because it is possible to break the tabs (I chipped a corner of one tab).  Once the tabs come out, the cover will hinge and rotate about the stubborn xmas tree fastener.  However, there is enough room to access the engine components.  You can also pull the dash cover off the fastener, because the flat part of the fastener can bend/fold to the point where it will slip through the (rather wide) hole at the bottom of the dash cover.  I'm not sure if it is possible to slip the dash cover back across the flat part of the xmas tree clip, though, so keep that in mind.

I struggled with this as well before doing the first oil change on a LGT2654 mower.  After scouring the internet, I finally found a Husqvarna support phone number (800-487-5951).  This number was great!  The lady picked up after only a minute and then had me on hold for maybe two more to get me an answer.

The answer I was given was to get up behind the fastener with a blade/flathead screwdriver.  Basically you just have to go from one side to the other gently prying the thing out and using the body of the mower for a little leverage.  Initially you may have to stick the screwdriver between the dash cover and the mower (rather than fastener and dash cover) because there will be more space there.  But eventually it just pops right out unharmed.  I, too, was mislead by the hex looking recess in the fastener which I guess doesn't serve much of a purpose.

So that's the rather simple solution to this.  The directions still could have been more clear.
