I'm replacing the spindles on a RZ5424 mower deck the 4 bolt hole on the spindles are not threaded is this normal? Are the bolts expected to make the threads? seems odd.
Yes this is normal as the mounting bolt are triangular self tapping versions. It also why new ones are needed most times as the old ones tend to seize and break upon removal. This is too prevent them from vibrating loose during operations.
Just make sure you start them straight and not at an angle.
Regular bolt and nylon lock nuts can be used but the spindle mounting holes would need tapping.
Personally I rebuild the spindles while their housing are still attached to the deck so don't need complete spindles and only replace when required.
