    Question:
My Husqvarna 36 is hard to start because the rope can be pulled only with great effort. The resistance is in a series, indicating that I am fighting full compression. Is there a compression release feature that eases starting effort? Would the replacement of a part (that a fairly mechanically savvy but not expert person could install) solve the problem? The engine ran pretty well last time I was able to start it. Thanks for your help.

No compression release. You check the starter for wear. Might need a new housing and pulley or just simply need oiling.

      John,

Remove the spark plug and see how it pulls with the spark plug out, If it pulls over easily. Then also put a rag or shop towel over the plug hole and give it 3-4 good pulls. If the shop towels are wet with fuel then you have possibly flooded the engine, and the engine will not compress liquid very well, and that is possibly what is happening.

However If the engine pulls over hard with the spark plug out, then check the starter mechanism to make sure that works freely. You can remove the starter fairly easily and then hold it in your hand and pull on the cord making sure everything is working correctly.

If the Starter pulls over easily and No spark plug in the engine, and its still difficult to move the piston, then remove the bar and chain, and make sure there is no obstructions in the clutch area, and If that is all clear and fairly clean then the last resort is there maybe an internal engine problem, like a broken piston ring, or a seizure or some other mechanical failure internal to the engine.

I hope this helps, please let me know If I can be of further assistance

The reason I suggested the checking the recoil is from my experience with Homelite XL high compression saws. I have seen where simply the lack of oil on the recoil pulley pivot point would makes these nearly impossible to pull through under compression but be fine with the plug out.

With this saw being as old as it is it is possible that the metering diaphragm has stiffen over time and be causing a self flooding problem.
