    Question:
My 455 rancher chainsaw eats chains. If the chain gets the least bit loose, it throws it, and ruins the chain( chews and beats the guide dogs up so they wont fit in the bar). I have had sthils, McColluchs, sears (David Bradley and Roper) and have never had one ruin a chain like this does. Is this a common problem with Husqvarna, or just this saw? Is there a fix for it? I really like the saw, but I can't afford to keep putting chains on it. I know how to take care of a saw. I've been using them for over 50 years.

      Steve,

I assume since you stated that you have 50 years experience, that you have already checked everything, like condition of chain, bar, drive sprocket, and drive sprocket needle bearing.

I have found chainsaws  that have a worn drive sprocket which have a groove worn into the drive sprocket teeth, this results in no lateral movement or side to side movement of the chain, also these newer chainsaws are running at much higher RPMs, some of them as much as 13,000 RPM's. compared to older chainsaws that only ran around 9000 RPM's. Anything that causes the chain to pull to one side will then result in the chain jumping off the bar because of the worn drive sprocket and/ or bearing problem.

One suggestion, I have done this on my chainsaws, and really like the system is to change the drive sprocket to an "Oregon Powermate" rim and sprocket system, this allows the lateral movement, and when the sprocket is worn I simply change the rim. Also the rims are very reasonable, typically around $5.- so if you put a new chain on once and a while you could change the rim too. Just a thought!

Here is a link to "Oregons Powermate system": /pdf/pro/products/sprockets/sprockets_powermate_system.htm

I hope this helps, and Please keep me advised of your problem. I certainly don't have your experience but If I can help in any way, Please give me a shout.

PS. I am Not a Husqvarna Representative or an Authorized Repair, just an experimental chainsaw person.
