    Problem:
Unit Will Not Start and Smells Strongly Like Fuel
    Cause:
Cause: the unit is flooded The customer is not following the proper starting procedure as outlined in the operators manual and there is now excessive fuel in the engine.
    Steps:
    Starting a Flooded Engine:
    • Step 1
Move the choke to the open position and hold the throttle in the open (full throttle), then repeat Step 5 until engine runs, let the unit run at full throttle for about 5 seconds (to warm up and burn off excess fuel)

    • Step 2
If the engine dies move the choke to the open position and hold the throttle in the open (full throttle), Then repeat Step 5 until engine runs, let the unit run at full throttle for about 5 seconds (to warm up and burn off excess fuel). (CATION Do not pull the starter cord out all the way and do not let go of the starter handle when starter cord is pulled out as this can damage the unit).

I bought a new  poulan pro string trimmer . It is very hard to start , once it stops it won't start . I have blisters on my fingers to prove it . I can smell gas fumes . It has less then an hour running time .  Is there an adjustment or sumething

      Bob,

If you've pulled the starter rope repeatedly and can smell gas fumes, then probably you have a flooded engine.   Here's how you start a flooded engine:

      STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE
Flooded engines can be started by placing the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position; then, pull the rope to clear the engine of excess fuel. This could require pulling the starter handle many times depending on how badly the unit is flooded.

      Complete starting instructions:

STARTING A COLD ENGINE (or a warm engine after running out of fuel)

      • Set unit on a flat surface.
      • Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times. Move choke lever to FULL CHOKE by aligning arrow with position shown on decal. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and hold through all remaining steps.
      • Pull starter rope handle sharply until engine sounds as if it is trying to start, but do not pull rope more than 6 times.
      • As soon as engine sounds as if it is trying to start, move choke lever to HALF CHOKE by aligning arrow with position shown on decal.
      • Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs, but no more than 6 pulls. If the engine doesn’t start after 6 pulls (at the HALF CHOKE position), move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position and press the primer bulb 6 times. Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger and pull the starter rope 2 more times. Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the starter rope until the engine runs, but no more than 6 pulls. If the engine doesn’t start, repeat procedure 2 additional times. NOTE: If engine still doesn’t start, it is probably flooded. Proceed to STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE.
      • Once the engine starts, allow it to run 10 seconds, then move the choke lever to OFF CHOKE by aligning arrow with position shown on decal. Allow the unit to run for 30 more seconds at OFF CHOKE before releasing the throttle trigger. NOTE: If engine dies with the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position, move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the rope until engine runs, but no more than 6 pulls.
