    Question:
RZ4824F ZTR stalls when lowering handbrake or pulling control levers in.
    Details:

Hello, I have a RZ4824F ZTR mower with 113 hours on it.  Mowed last week and drove it into my shed with no issues.  Started it this morning to mow and when I was halfway out of the shed, the engine died.  I was able to start it right back up, but if I lower the hand brake, or attempt to pull the control levers in toward me, the engine immediately stalls.  I suspect it's one of those anti-litigation devices that is sensing one of the safety features not being "right", but would like thoughts and advice on what to look for to get her mowing - we've had a ton of rain and the grass is getting tall.  Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.........Ed

Check the operator's seat switch connection. If the connector is loose the internal shorting device will the connector act as if the operator is not on the seat short out the magneto if the brake switch is off or if the PTO switch is on. This shorting device is not shown in the electrical diagram but is a common safety feature preventing operator from simply disconnecting the seat switch.

Hi Eugene, and thank you once again.  I'll check that next.  Took off the handbrake switch - the connector terminals were filthy and I cleaned them.  I'm checking continuity on that now and I'm not getting any resistance on any combo of terminals that I touch, with or without the button pressed on the switch.  One of the terminals is slightly loose in the switch housing and I did get a blip of resistance when I moved it but mostly I'm getting zero resistance on all combos of terminals touched with my meter.  I'm inclined to think it might be this switch, but would like your thoughts on it, please.  I'll check the butt-in-seat switch connection next while waiting for your thoughts on what I've found so far.

      As always, much appreciated..........Ed

According the wiring diagram the brake switch is a triple pole double throw switch means you should be continuity Across half of the terminals either with the switch depress or not depressed. Sound like it not working now but had to been working prior as you have not been able to start the engine if was completely open. It has to be closed in depress position for the starter to engage while the kill circuit side is open. Then when you release the brake switch the starter circuit opens and kill circuit closes but seat prevents the engine kill by being open breaking the closed kill circuit while the operator is on the seat.

Also as safety measure while the brake switch is on is that if either one of the control arms is move from neutral position the engine should die preventing transaxle damage while the brakes are engaged.

A copy of the wiring diagram is in the owners manual.

Looks like it was the seat switch.  Took it out and cleaned it, but it didn't look anywhere as nasty as the handbrake switch.  I first reinstalled the handbrake switch and tested it but the engine still stalled.  After I cleaned and put the seat switch back and tested it, she worked fine.  Put the fender and seat back on and took her for a ride - ran great.  Thanks again for the help, Eugene.  I really appreciate it.

      Regards...........Ed
