    Question:
I bought a 450 and am completely satisfied with it. It's a great chainsaw. But it's time for me to change the bar and chain, and going to several local dealers they only carry .050 chains. Mine came with a .058. My question is, "What is the justification to staying with the thicker drive link rather than just going with the one that is most readily available?"

From what I tell it is mostly a preference thing. It my area nearly all saws are using the .050 bar and chain but are few that are .058. I would think about the only you would really notice is that .050 setup is slightly lighter resulting in improved balance of the chainsaw. Personally I have use both combos and didn't really notice any differences.

On some brands of chains only the part of the drive link that goes into the bar groove is reduce to .050 and the rest is still .058.

For the sake of convenience it is best to go with what is the most poplar in your area as you could get a replacement quickly especially during the prime cutting time. I have damage chains in the middle of project out in the sticks had to hunt for a replacement and as you said sometimes a non poplar size would be hard to find.
