    Question:
I'm interested in buying a 460 rancher. Lowes is selling a pre-pack 460 with a 24" bar and chain in a box set. Yet when I look at the Husqvarna website the 460 rancher shows a max bar length of 20". Why the discrepancy? 4" is a lot of extra chain if the saw doesn't have enough power to drive it.

mr. major,  it may be possible that is a typo that lowes made a mistake with somehow.  but that 460 has an x-torq 60+ cc engine.  further on, that engine develops 3.62 hp.  I assure you that it can drive a narrow kerf .050 3/8" chain that is 24" long. and cut very nicely while doing so.  however, if it is correct that lowes is intending the 24" bar & chain to be part of a combo deal,  then I would hold the 24" package in reserve, and purchase a 20" bar & chain as my everyday "lets go cutting" set-up.  if you ever fell anything really big that needs bucked, then you have the goods.  just my imagination running away with me.  anyway, it sounds like a fairly good deal.

I have a fleet of saws some big, some intermediate, my smallest saw is 45.4cc, and I drive a 20" chain all day on that.  and the kerf is .058 so it takes a slightly wider bite with no problem whatsoever.  so driving a 24 on a 60cc x-torq is no factor at all.

I repair/re-build saws professionally, so if you ever get stumped give us a shout.  i'll be glad to help...

Thanks for the answer.  I did some more checking and the package from lowes part # is listed on the husqvarna website, but was concerned when the specs stated it was outside the max.  I've been looking for a 24" bar to run a ripping chain on an alaska chainsaw mill.  I have no intent of doing this all day everyday with the 460 but would it be sufficient to harvest some lumber from timber I've taken on my property?

I understand.  I am not clear why Husqvarna does that. they list my 576xpg at max 28" bar, and my 395xp at max 36" bar.  but either one of those saws will drive a 60" chain easily.  just keep in mind, the longer the chain, the bigger the pricetag.  also, square ground full chisel will stay sharper longer, but takes extreme attention to detail while sharpening with 3 corner chisel files.

I believe lowes sends those saws out with round ground semi chisel chain.  if you intend to rip boards on the portable mill, then you would be better served buying square ground full chisel full skiptooth chain.  roundies don't hold up to ripping lumber like squares.

the skiptooth full chisel are available many places. madsens, baileysonline, Husqvarna, etc. on the Husqvarna webpage they are identified by an "S" after the chain #...

but be very careful when ordering because I find the H-46 fits the 460 model and according to the webpage, the H-47S doesn't. so a call to Husqvarna is definitely in order.  it should have 84 drive links, .050 gauge, and 3/8" pitch  for the 24" chain.  hopefully you can fit a skipchain to the 460.  good luck...
