    Question:
    Hi

I recently purchased a low hour (not sure exactly as hour meter not working) RZ4621 CA Ride on.
Problem is the drive stalls on moderate inclines, it seems like the left drive unit is lazy and there is a slight oil leak from the driveshaft seal.
I tried the purge transmission system thing and that seemed to help it but now after storing for a couple of weeks it is back to where it was.
It looks like the drive units are sealed units so you cant add oil to them.
I'm wondering if I can add some oil through the breather fitting and do another purge would that help at all.

Appreciate and help I can get.

    Cheers

The EZT can have oil added but I would highly recommend getting that oil leak fixed first. The oil is 20W50 motor oil. Clean; no used oil as damage will occur if used oil is put in. For parts you will need the EZT model number Example: ZX-XXXX-1XXX-XXXX.

On your particular EZT it appears to have vent tube instead of a capped fill port. Also you will not the oil filter shown in the following diagram as this is general diagram that refers any of the four main models plus any of the sub models. The diagram is for reference to where the fill port and oil level check port only.

      Thanks Eugene

Really appreciate all the trouble you have gone to to answer this. Yep, mine has vent tubes so looks like this is where i will try to fill it from. Do you know if there is a plug to remove to know when it is full, like a overflow port ??

The only Hydro Gear transaxle I currently have on the yard are the EZT version which the oil level is check through the fill/vert port and that measure is 1" below the top of the port.

If it is there item 11 in the diagram I posted it where it is check; hence, the big black arrow. Don't work on these much as they very reliable units but with all things a few do fail. On the last IZT version I had to refill I had to fill through the vent but it was completely empty so I just added the normal capacity amount and did a purge. It was a slow go as I let it vent as I filled. I was using a long transmission fill funnel fill it part way and waited until all that oil drain in as air bubbled out. These unit weren't made to serviced except in a shop setting and then it a pain; unless, pull we the unit.

On the one you have the total capacity is 2.4 qts so you may need up to that amount.

Well, I refilled the units today using an automotive oil syringe such as used for refilling gearboxes, worked well to, Put one full pump in each unit, (about 500cc) Did a purge and took it for a test drive but doesn't seem to have improved it much.

Things I noted were the left handle goes forward further than the right when operating.

The machine still struggles to climb small inclines but strangely seems a little better when backing off the handles slightly, Seems to work a whole lot better in reverse than forward.

Seems to start out slow after starting the engine but gets faster as presumably the units build up pressure but still not good on inclines

      Cheers

      Update

OK, think I have this fixed now, posting this in case anyone else has this problem.

I noticed the drive belt that runs the EZT units seemed a bit noisy. I figured it couldn't hurt to adjust the tension, upon checking the belt I found it was a little loose so undid the tensioner hold bolt and let the spring take up the slop in the belt.

Did another purge and test drove the mower, best its ever gone, climbing hills a lot better now.

I did note the tensioner pulley looked a bit dodgy and since it was made of plastic figured this will be due for replacement soon, Hoping they make a steel replacement for this.

It seems you may have found the problem. If your had to loose the bolt on the idler swing arm then there is a problem in that area. The idler swing arm normally moves freely on it own with the spring taking up any slack in the belt. With slack in the drive belt it slip on the Hydros pulleys. It may be rusted in the bolt area. Advise detaching the spring and remove that swing arm and check as to what is binding it.

As the flat idler pulley Husqvarna's 539110311 version and many of the AM versions are still plastic but there appear to be a metal version that can be made work but likely will need the bushing (standoff) changed out and this requires a press to do so. I have done some change outs like this on other pulleys but the process damages the plastic versions when removing the bushing. Sometimes my vendor has generic pulley without the bushing that works where I just install the old bushing.
