    Question:
I have a yth24v48. It backfires during acceleration, at all throttle positions, and has no power. even less while cutting. It will choke down while backfiring and stop, even at full throttle. replaced plugs, cleaned fuel system, replaced air filter. what else could it be?

Most likely you have bad coil or kill wire harness with bad diode(s).

First try pulling a plug on one side if stays running. Swap side and try again. Most likely one will kill the engine. The side that kills is the working side.

Thank You for your suggestion. I finally found the wiring harness after many calls to Briggs parts departments locally. It's hard to believe they don't stock that part. This seems to be a very common problem with this engine. Maybe there will be a recall, or a design change to correct this issue. The diodes they use must be insufficient for the purpose. I only have 44 hours on my mower, and now it is running better than it ever has. Thanks again.

Since I am small shop I haven't seen but one case of diode failure. Instead of replacing the harness I repaired it using 1000 PIV 2.5A doides that I had some left from the time I did office equipment repairs.

But Briggs may be using too small of a rated diode but I replace them here there was nothing left to get an number off of.
