    Question:
RZ5424 Motor revving when run for a while.
    Details:

I have a RZ5424 with a Kawasaki engine. It has 600 hours on it and a fresh oil and filter change.  It does great around the house, I only have a little over half an acre so it only takes 30 minutes or so to cut. It runs perfect every single time. However, I also have another piece of property that I mow every few weeks that is around 1.75 acres. It does great for the first 45 minutes to an hour, and then the engine with start sputtering like it wants to die. I stop the blades and stop moving, then pull the choke, and it will rev back up but continually rev over and over for a minute or so, and then settle back down. It will do this every few minutes from then on. If I let it cool off completely, it will do fine for another 30-45 minutes and start trying to die and then rev continually again. It always has over half a tank of fuel so the fuel pump is not starved. The fuel filter is fairly new and always has some fuel in it when this problem happens. I plan on cleaning the carb this weekend and replacing the fuel pump. Is there anything else that I can check that could cause it? How can I check the coils for proper voltage, other than just pulling a spark plug wire? One of the engine covers has red RTV around it, so it appears that someone opened that side up. I can only speculate that they adjusted or replaced a valve or something similar, or it had a leaky gasket. The RTV could have a leak I suppose that only leaks when the engine gets up to a certain temperature and everything expands. I need to be able to mow for up to 2 hours at a time and this problem is making that impossible. The first few times I mowed the property I did not have this problem and the mower ran for 2+ hours straight with no problems.. Thanks.

With this happening after engine gets hot and I am assuming it is a V twin too from the engine size; I would remove the engine shroud and check for a mouse bed that preventing proper cooling. Then it keeps happening then start looking other possible causes.

It has the Kawasaki FR691V-ES00 V-twin. No mouse beds.

No obstructions were anywhere near the engine that would cut down air flow. Changed the spark plugs. Cleaned the carb really well. Checked all fuel lines. Everything looks good. There is a small oil leak that had coated half of the engine in oil which grass and dust had stuck to. Fixed the leak and cleaned the engine off. The engine looks nearly new inside and out. Cut my yard and it still does great like it always has. Have not tried my land yet. What else could it be? How can I check the coils?

Mowed my land and it still starts surging after mowing for around an hour.

PROBLEM SOLVED. The fuel lines looked relatively new, but they were deteriorating on the inside after the fuel filter, so particles were getting to the carb and clogging it up. Replaced all fuel lines, cleaned the carb, and now it runs perfect every time. Through my efforts I discovered that 90% of the time a surging problem is due to a fueling problem. I hope that helps someone else more than the other lack of contributions.

Tnx, for the update Josh. I will keep this in mind on repair here too. I have EPA line liners failing but have coming to pieces and clogging carb but anything with the stuff the factories putting out.

And got to watch for those claims too as I brought so supposedly 100% resistant fuel lines for 2 cycles and they were worse than the Tygon lines I was already using.
