    Cold starting?

    Question:
    Cold starting?
    Details:

I just bought a Husqvarna GTH48XLSI Garden Tractor with a 42" snow blower attachment.

This tractor wont start when the temp goes below 35 degrees.  The dealer told me that this tractor with the Briggs and Stratton engine will not start easily when the temp is below 40 degrees f.

If this is the case why does Husqvarna sell this tractor with an automatic choke?

Every tractor I owned prior to this always started easily with the manual choke

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

First the automatic choke system may just need adjusting to where it fully closes. The Briggs auto choke system on of the rider engines does tend to get out adjustment sometimes.

Second the EPA requirements are part of the problem too. Summer engines are having to run so lean now that it is causing problems in colder weather. Most shops are not willing to risk the EPA tampering fines associated with the needed modifications to the carburetor for them to run in colder weather. I just ran my first case of carburetor icing below 40F on my personal mower.

      Thanks for the comment.

Can you tell me how to fix this?  The dealer took the tractor back and they said they could not make any adjustments.  They contacted Husqvarna and they said that it is not serviceable.

I am very mechanicaly inclined as a retired mechanic.  I don't see any way to adjust this choke.

It seems very silly to me that Husqvarna would build and sell a tractor that won't start when the temp gets below 40 degrees and then sells it with a snow blower!!

I know it does sound dumb to me too. Okay let see if I can find the engine's service manual. What is the model and type number on of the valve covers of the Briggs? I am showing it is a 44R877-0008-G1 here.

Thanks Steven. The Briggs Power Portal didn't list any info on this engine so I have emailed them for the info but it can take up to 48 hrs before I get any resonance back. I thinking that may be the throttle cable isn't pulling the choke fully closed when put in the choking position.

Hopefully will know more soon, Sorry that I don't know more currently as I haven't work on this version yet in my shop. It is a new design that I haven't seen before.
