    Oil on electric MagStop Clutch/Brake

    Question:
    Oil on electric MagStop Clutch/Brake
    Details:

My Husquvarna CZ4817 lost 3 engine mounting bolts causing a slight rotation of engine on mower deck. This slight rotation caused the oil drain tube (tube with 90 degree elbow hanging down into the hole in the deck) to start hitting the edge of hole because of engine vibrations. (I do not know how long this has been happening but I have a series of issues which I am trying to rectify;) The vibrations led to the oil drain tube from the engine to actually break while I had the engine running just to check on another problem (overheating and shutting off?) Ran engine at high speed about 15 minutes - all ok. Then went to lower speed and wanted to actually drive mower to see if it shuts down again. That is when I noticed engine oil all over mower deck and floor. Was able to get remaining threads from oil drain pipe out and inserted new pipe.

Problem: Oil ran all over mower deck and ran thru deck holes onto the electric clutch. I know oil on a clutch does not work. Took a screwdriver and paper towel into space where clutch is and was wiping oil from the clutch surfaces. Wanted to remove clutch and hand clean better. Can you spray solvent/alchol of some type to clean clutch surface? Could not get clutch off so how do you do this? In case I have to buy a new clutch. Could not get crescent wrench on ring with the flat sides while trying to unloosen attaching bolt.

    Thanks for your time.

It sounds like you PTO clutch has the double flats. These are 1-3/8 wide so you need a 1-3/8 open end wrench to hold it and use an impact the remove the bolt. Later you would the same wrench to hold the flats as re-torque the retaining bolt to 55 ft-lbs. DON"T use an impact to install the PTO clutch bolt as you will over tighten it. Just remember to make the clutch assembly engages the anti-rotate arm or you will destroy the clutch assembly at start-up. Also note that PTO clutch assembly do seize on the crankshaft sometimes. Hopefully this not the case as you may need to destroy the clutch to get it off. Make sure you use anti seize compound on the crankshaft when reinstalling the clutch.

I would not use any stronger than rubbing alcohol as you don't want damage the electric coil and you still could the bearings by washing their lube away. Without lube the bearing will seize. But if you are carefully you should be fine. Once cleaned and installed you will need burnish the clutch again which 10 5 secs cycles at half throttle; allowing the deck to come up to full speed and full stop during each cycle. This is remove any residues left after the cleaning. This is the same if you install a new clutch which has a protective film on the steel plates. This burns off the protective coating and prevents the clutch plate from warping.

Yes I have the double flats. When you say impact, do you mean the air powered impact? I cant imagine the impact tool you hit with a hammer - no room.

Not sure if I want to handle this. The mower repair place near me used to be Husqvarna dealer when I bought mower but they  dropped them citing quality and getting parts problems - so they say. My past experience with them (mower repair place) is more skewed to convincing me to buy a new ZTR! They sell Toto or Cub. I proudly claimed that my mower was built like a tank and still runs fine. The dont see it like that. So kind of wondering how good of a job they would do cleaning clutch and would refuse to do so and want me to just buy new clutch. I will if I need to but wanted to try cleaning first.

So impact - air driven will do the job? Not sure if loosening without an impact would be very tough to do or not I have not dealt with this much torque.

Yes I mean air driven impact gun but with the flats using a 1-3-8" wrench to hold it and 1/2 drive ratchet or breaker bar with 5/8 socket should be fine just how it is although it should still close to the 55 ft-lbs. It is just the impact is faster for me since I am in a shop setting. The double flats is so much better than having to tried hold the flywheel to remove the bolt.

Actually the blades are tighten to at this level too; though they can tighten more due metal sticking which is why I also perfer an impact to remove them.

        Thaks. Good to know.

Should the 1-3/8" open end wrench be an offset? I dont know if they make one or not. I have no wrenched that big except for Crescent or pipe wrench.

The type of offset you need isn't made that I know of. I am however conplating making my own tool from 2 open end wrenches as I am seeing these double more often than I once did. All we can do right now is to get the open end in as securely as we can.
