    Question:
I recently purchased a YTH22V46 from Lowes. There was an issue with the mower so they decided to exchange it for me however the new mower they brought me was a YTA22V46. From what I understand the difference is the YTA is a belt driven automatic and the YTH that I originally purchased is a hydrostatic. When I called Lowes back they told me that they are all hydrostatic which is either a lie or the person just didnt know what they were talking about. I do not even see this new YTA22V46 on Husqvarna's website yet. Is this new automatic an improvement on the hydrostatic? I originally purchased the hydrostatic after doing some research and deciding that was the transmission that I wanted but now I need to decide whether or not to have them exchange this again for the correct YTH22V46. They were the same price on the Lowe's website and I would be using it to be mowing a little under 2 aches of land with lots of farm buildings to navigate and some up and down drainage hills and ditches.

I haven't had seen the new General Transmissions RS800 in person so I having to rely on its service manual. This manual doesn't even show anything on the internal workings of this transaxle but it appears to be belt driven mechanical transmission. The belt drive system uses a sliding sheave system similar to the MTD system but more complex. Similar systems have been in use for years on ATVs to provide variable speed on single speed drives.

There actual plans in the auto industry to go to this type system to replace today's automatic transmissions. As to if it is an improvement over the hydrostatic transaxles previously use only time will tell. Of course this is my personal opinion as I like to wait and see how things work under the real world use.
