    Question:
I have a husqvarna 440 x-torq chainsaw and i am having issues with getting it to stay running unless the choke is on and i hold the throttle in what is going on?
    Details:

i have a husqvarna 440 x-torq chainsaw that i just bought 3 days ago and it worked perfectly fine i have my own tree service company and i was out cutting a tree down and after running it and letting it cool down after i was done cutting the tree i went to start it back up following the instructions on the saw itself for a warm engine and the saw will not start unless the choke is on half way and the throttle is fully held it i keep getting the strong smell of gas so i took the spark plug out cleaned it up checked to make the gap was at .020 and it was so i continued to keep trying and trying until i finally got it running well i let it run with the choke on because i knew as soon as i turned the choke off it would die so i got into the user manual and went to trouble shooting i made sure to put fresh 50:1 fuel into the saw and fill it with the premium husqvarna bar and chain oil and i even checked to make sure the fuel lines were not kinked, split or disconnected and everything was still in great condition including the fuel filter i just have ran out of thoughts on what could be causing this issue

      Michael,

If this is a brand new chainsaw, and you have the receipt then I would recommend taking it back to the store or dealer.

If this is a used chainsaw that you bought, then it sounds like a carburetor problem, or possibly an adjustment. If it ran perfectly fine for a few hours or part of a day, It is suspicious as to what possibly changed from when you started using it.

A couple of the things that I would check and try, Is first with the brake off and the engine Not running pull on the chain, and make sure the chain moves freely and properly on the bar, that there is nothing binding with the chain or clutch. If there is any binding or restriction, I would clean around the clutch, and clutch / brake cover and then re-install everything and check that it moves freely.

Next, Turn the "T" adjustment screw about 1 1/2 turns clockwise (CW), make sure you count the turns so you can put it exactly back where it is currently set. (Note: This will increase the starting Idle, However be aware that the chain will now rotate, when you start up the chainsaw without the brake on). Next, using the Normal starting procedure without the brake on (Note: Again be careful starting since the chain should move fairly fast), Start the chainsaw, and take it off of choke, hopefully the chainsaw will continue to run, and the chain will now be moving. Now turn the "T" adjustment slowly counter clockwise (CCW), just until the chain just stops moving, Note: How far you turned it (CCW), you may not need to turn it back to the original setting. Finally, Shut the engine off, and re-start the chainsaw normally, Did this correct the problem ? If Not then you may have a carburetor problem.

I hope this helps, Please let me know If I can help any further.

I actually have the answer for this

      The 440 instructions are wrong.

Husqvarna states for a warm start to flip up the choke and pump that primer bulb 6 times for a warm start. 6 times!

I quickly learned from speaking to our local service center that this is known to be wrong for awhile, yet HV does nothing about it.

The proper way to warm start a 440 is flip to choke, 1-2 pumps max, pull chord, weather it starts or not, flip back to run, pull chord again, off it goes.

Hope this helps, dated as it is.

Once you flood it so badly, it will take awhile to get is started again, or to where it will run unless it is full open.
