Question:
Mdl YTH24K48 with Kohler engine. Ran out of gas while mowing. Now starter just clicks as if battery voltage is low. Battery and connections are good. Always started and cranked perfect. Seems like too much of a coincidence for it not to be related to running out of gas. Could it be a carburetor issue but I don't see the connection between fuel and the starter clicking? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Answer
Since you was mowing grass make sure you have turn the PTO back off as the clicking may the the PTO clutching engaging.
Otherwise charge your battery and see if the mower will start. If so check the PTO clutch current drain it should no more than 7 amps max with 3-5 amps being normal. Partial short PTO clutch continue work but drain the battery as they pull more current the alternator can provide.
This is something else to check for and that is "Is the alternator/voltage regulator working?". Should putting out 13-14.8 volts DC while the engine is running with the PTO engaged. I have had several voltage regulators to fail the last year on customer mowers.

Thank you for your advice. I did remember to turn the PTO off. I will do the checks you mentioned. Just seems odd that the first and only problem in 5 years is the starter clicking immediately after running our of gas, I can't see how the two are related. Thanks again.
