    Question:
Husqvarna 324L 4 stroke trimmer has 90 psi compression, won't start on starter fluid, and owner says he always has to run it on partial choke? Is this because it was set too lean? And does the low compression mean he might have scored the piston?

Robert, from my experience with 4 trimmers that uses separate oil baths I would say it worn out. Matter of fact I will not even accept the TTI 4 cycle (Troy-bilt, Ryobi, etc) versions for repairs as they are so bad fail due to lack of proper oiling. The only reliable 4 stroke handhelds in my opinion has been the Stihl 4 mix version that run 2 cycle fuel mix.

Yes it was too lean if he had to always had to run it on partial choke.

And yes low compression does indicate you have not only a scored piston but also a scored cylinder. It would require a bore scoping or disassemble to confirm the damage.

Since this is base on the GX25/35 engine design the Honda shop manual could be help. I could send you a copy of the GX25 manual but it does not the rocker arm disassembly and normally you would not being that anyways. If wish a copy send me a PM via this site with email address and I send the copy I have. It not the most recent version but should help on the internals.

Thanks for the information. I saw a video of someone who fixed theirs with a sledgehammer. Maybe the companies need to do more research before the 4 stroke trimmers are reliable. My email address is macattack@huges.net and I would appreciate the file on the GX25/35 engine design. Again - Thanks!

After getting a hold of a bore scope, it shows a badly scored cylinder wall.

As I suspected from my experience other 4 cycle handhelds with separate oil baths.
