Question:
I have a YTH24K48, and I am very concerned about how often it catches fire when mowing. I mowed my lawn yesterday, and a passer by stopped and flagged me down because there were flames coming from the muffler area. It happened 3 times yesterday, and has happened in the past. The heat shield appears to catch debris (grass/leaves/pine needles) and the heat from the muffler causes ignition. Is this a known issue/design flaw? It doesn't seem like this is safe, or that I should have to repeatedly stop to extinguish a fire when mowing? The attached picture is after the flames died down- when the motor is running, the flames get fanned and much bigger. I turned off the motor to run for my camera.
Answer
Appears to a newer design. I can see it would catching debris as that lip on the along the lower does not need to be there. It would catching the debris instead the exhaust simply blowing it out. Older designs don't have this lip.
Either way dry materials and fire don't mix. See if the dealer is willing to remove this lip.
Just an independent shop opinion.
