    Question:
395xp part # 503 57 97 01 is shown with a loop on the straight section that is above the spring. ALL replacement parts providers show a part with the loop below the straight section. Will the replacement part work? The diagram does not indicate that the spring is attached anywhere or it's location in the chain brake. Where and how does it fit?

    Thanks.

      James,

Its a little bit difficult without some pictures to exactly describe how that "Brake Band" fits inside the clutch cover, even though I have replaced a few of them. However here is a link to a "How to do it" site, and it looks pretty good, so maybe this will help you.

I hope this helps, I think pictures seem to always help.

Thanks for the information. The link you referenced shows an appropriate drawing but no further assistance. The poster seems to have the same problem with a "mystery" spring; i.e., no indication of where or how to install the part. To be clear, it is not the brake band that is the problem but the spring referenced on the Husky parts list in the original post.

        Hope some one can help!

        Thanks.

      James,

OOps', and sorry somehow I looked up the part # and got the brake band mistaken. I have attached a picture, and will try to describe how that spring fits inside the handle Part # 5, in the diagram.

The spring goes inside the handle, there is both a large coil of spring and then the single coil of the same spring. The actual position of the spring is very close to the diagram. Parts #19 & 20 capture the large coil inside the handle, and then pin (part 3) with "e" clip (part 4) captures the single turn of the spring. The diagram is a little bit askew, and may have been better if they had a cutaway view of the plastic handle with the spring inside, or even swapping positions of part 5 and part 19 would have made it look a little bit closer.

Your replacement spring should work as long as you have the large coil in the spring, and the single coil, the ends of the spring one sticks up inside the handle, and the other end goes down into brake cover.

I hope this helps a little,

      Karla

" Parts #19 & 20 capture the large coil inside the handle, "

I don't see how this is possible. Pts. 19/20 secure the handle through a solid casting. There is nowhere for the spring to be in close proximity.

      James,

I looked at a few other IPL's for different chainsaws models, and some of the Models don't use that spring inside the handle at all, but have a small spiral second spring to the brake band spring which repositions the brake handle.

So maybe there is something wrong with the Model 395XP drawing ? I don't have a Model 395 xp here to reference, and all of the different Models and brands that do use that type of spring, which I have taken apart, and put back together, the spring fits inside the brake handle as I described. I don't see any other way of mounting that spring or holding it in place, or having it work properly since its main purpose is to reposition the handle after you pull on the brake handle to engage or disengage the brake.

Maybe search out some other Husqvarna Models that have a similar brake, and refer to their IPL drawings, I looked at a few the other day on the Husqvarna site to try and help with a solution to how that spring could be installed differently.

Please let me know what you discover, and I will continue to search out an answer. I have also looked at some of the "Youtube" videos but could not find any Instructional repair on that spring for the model 395xp, which is strange.
