Question:
I have a Husqvarna 61 purchased in the 1990's. Light use each year. L Was very hard to pull starter cord last year but finally got it to start and it ran great. This year can't pull cord at all. With spark plug out it turns over with no effort but won't with plug in.
Answer
Check the recoil starter assembly. I have seen old Homelites that had this problem and was lack lube.

It could be a carburetor problem with a bad metering diaphragm and metering needle. If your leaving fuel in the chainsaw, and the metering needle is not shutting off the fuel, even when the chainsaw is shut off fuel will leak into the engine, This will result in the engine being partially flooded and very difficult to pull over. Also If and when the engine does start, you may notice lots of smoke until it burns out the excess fuel from the engine. If you know how to rebuild the carburetor, I would recommend cleaning it, making sure the needle valve is closing, and replacing the metering diaphragm If it is not real flexible, they will get stiff when they are old. I hope this helps !
