    Question:
I purchased a 26" Weedeater riding mower less than one year ago, and I am in need of a differential ASM. In the manual and on the web it is listed as a $58.00 part, (plastic I might add), but now I have been told it is actually no longer avaliable, that you must purchase the entire assembly for $345.00? Am I crazy, it that possible? I mean first of all it isn't even one year old, and second of all, the part is PLASTIC and no longer able to purchase it, even though it is still listed in the manual and on the web as Part #428876. What a shaft! Any ideas?
    Is this a warranty issue?

Seems your issue is not uncommon.  The manufacturer has upgraded the differential ASM and indeed no longer makes the original.  However the price does seem astronomical however, the part and installation is under warrenty provided you have the proper documentation and purchased the mower new.

Although I do not know where you purchased the mower but, go and speak to either the store you bought it from or if they do not have a repair/service department call the manufacturer of the mower directly (contact info is on the back of the owners manual) and they can provide you with a list of service centers in your area.

I had the same issue but had it replaced with the new differential assembly under warranty. Generally, I had know problem setting everything up with a certified repair shop but, be prepared to do some of the homework yourself.  Just make sure to explain exactly what the issue is and emphasize the fact that it is a warranty issue.  Even (this is where the homework on your part comes in) offer to find out the exact part #'s as some suppliers may have the old part# on file without realizing an upgraded unit is available.

Thank you for your response. I did purchase the mower new (at K Mart). I have been in contact with a local certified dealer, but they do not want to tackle this issue.  Weedeater itself has declinded my complaint, they will not accept responsibility for the assembly being broke (as you are aware, there are several people with the same issue).  Is this something you would go to the attorney general with?  Your thoughts?

I got just the differential here:

Yes, the outside gears are plastic, but the inside gears are metal, and on mine, those were the ones that were stripped out on the old one.
