    Question:
I am looking at new mowers. Lowes has the YTH22V46 listed as hydrostatic. The YTA22V46 is listed as automatic. However, the Husqvarna website says both are hydrostatic. Which is correct?

From what I have been reviewing service manual wise the General Transmissions RS800 is not a hydrostatic but is a more complicated system simple to MTD variable speed system that use varying size sliding sheaves (one type pulley). It fairly new on the market so little is actually know by most us techs until we get our hands on one to see for ourselves.

A good example of the sliding sheave system is the system that many ATVs use.

If by automatic you assume they mean non-shifting, then hydrostatic is the same thing. I have the same model. In an older MTD mower I have, if your deck runs up against a stump, you cannot shift into reverse without getting off and pulling it away. With the hydrostatic you can back up just by pushing on the reverse accelerator. Very nice. Removing the mower deck for maintenance is a pain however, but I don't know if other manufacturers make it any easier.

James here is a picture of the General Transmission RS800P that we were discussing. The two pulleys you see are sliding sheave type very those used on ATVs. There is even plans for trials to replace our current automobile automatics with this style of system. MTD system uses one where this one uses two.
