    Question:
I purchased a brand new 550XP chainsaw last year sometime, I just opened it to use it and the oil cap unscrews for about one full turn easily them starts to get tight. This can not be removed at all. I am pretty strong and at the point I feel it will break the lift up tab to help you tighten and loosen it. My hope is that the place I purchased it will hand me a new one not take it in for warranty repair. It a defective saw it my eyes never used the saw
    Details:

purchased it from Jacks small engine, own 3 others ones. one same two larger. 550XP $$about 600 bucks maybe more but around there

      Kevin,

I agree with you that there must be a defect in the threaded area of either the cap or crankcase/ fuel tank threads, and I also know you said you had three other chainsaws that did not have this problem. But just a thought, Did you try pushing down or into the tank, while trying to remove the Cap ? I would suggest about ( 5 - 10 ) lbs of force pushing in on the cap while trying to unthread the cap. I have had a few chainsaws that the caps seemed really tight and on the older style caps, where the owners tried channel locks and vise grips. or tried putting a scrench in the (old style) slotted caps, and just about destroyed the caps trying to remove them. I understand that you have the new style flip up cap,(Note:  I have a few chainsaws with this type of cap also), Anyhow even the real difficult ones where someone tried vise grips, I have been able to open by pushing in on the cap while twisting it out and No tools either, Again, just a thought ! I suspect you probably have already resolved this problem, But I still in the future would recommend pushing in on the cap while twisting it out, (Sort of like the Old Car radiator caps that you had to push down before twisting out).

Also, Please let me Know what was the resolution to your problem ?  I am curious of different problems similar to your problem.

Thanks and I hope this helps

      Karla, how goes it..

Kevin.. open the cap.. look down into the cap you will see  deep rectangle. stick a screwdriver into the deep rectangle. turn the screwdriver and take out the cap.. inspect the cap and look at the crankcase. I  highly doubt the crankcase is jacked up.. cap could have been jacked up.. the gasket might be dry and causing you issues...

i put a cap on a saw here, cant remember which model, and i noticed that the center section of the cap was rubbing on the paint on the crankcase on the side of the threads on the crankcase.. once it "wore into" the plastic cap, it was no longer an issue.

do not be concerned with damaging anything by using the screwdriver, the screwdriver slot was designed specifically in case of issues like this, frozen gaskets, or broken cap flip mechanism.

let us know how it goes..

      Kevin,

Just a follow-up. Did you resolve your Cap problem ? What did you discover ?

I hope you were able to get it fixed, replaced, or repaired.
