We unscrewed the piece that houses the starter cord and were able to pull it out just fine, but when it is installed back on the trimmer, it is still only pulling out no more than about 1/3 the length before it locks up. We also were unable to remove the spark plug using a standard 5/8" deep socket normally used for spark plugs - it would not fit onto the spark plug.

It sounds like you may have excess fuel in the crankcase. You will need to remove the plug and pull the rope several times to get it all out. CAUTION please do not let the coil wire come in contact with any part of the engine. It WILL cause the fuel and vapor to ignite so be careful.
