    Question:
I own an Husqvarna 316 electric chainsaw. After successful, but limited use, it stopped working. It won't start. Other then taking it in for service or using it as a doorstop, how can I fix it?

      James,

I took a look at the IPL drawing for a model 316 electric chainsaw, and there are actually Not too many electric parts that would stop it from working.

Obvious things to look at would be the electrical cord and plug, with an Ohmmeter or Multimeter you could easily due a continuity test, on alot of electrical equipment over time the cord gets flexed at the plug, and becomes a good place to break.

Next the throttle switch is where the power is interrupted and then connected when you pull on the trigger, it looks like its a two pole switch, again with an ohmeter and after you remove the switch check both poles for continuity when you operate the switch, Unfortunately I looked up the price on this switch and they are about $35 plus shipping, so a little pricey otherwise I would suggest just replace the switch.

Next, there is a micro switch in series to the motor, I suspect the micro switch is for a safety device like maybe the chain brake, or the clutch or something of the kind, again an Ohmeter can be used to continuity check the micro switch, again and unfortunately they are about $30.- too, otherwise I would just replace it too. I would also check out what causes the micro switch to operate, there may be information in your owners manual that explains the safety switch, like "If the brake is apllied the motor will stop", that would be a good place to start looking for a problem, because the micro switch may test good, but whatever operates it is stuck or dirty, and may just need a good cleaning.

Finally, the Motor there are alot of books, manuals, and online help including U-tubes on how to test a motor but again a little difficult to explain in detail without seeing the motor, If the motor is a universal motor it may have replaceable carbon brushes, and I have seen them go bad or get worn and need replacement on other electrical motor equipment,

I have included a link to an IPL drawing for a Model 316 electric chainsaw, and hope this helps.

      James,

Some additional Information, I just finished reading a few reviews on the Model 316, and one individual stated he had a problem with his throttle switch. He said it worked intermittently and then stopped working all together, so I am suspecting that yours may also be the same part. I also stated that the switch may be a 2 pole switch which could be checked with an ohmeter, only because when I looked at a replacement switch it has 4 terminals on it and connects to both wires of the power, but the more I think about it, It is probably an electronic module type switch. So it really won't be to easy to test with an ohmeter. I would probably suggest just trying a replacement.

The part number for the throttle switch is 508 03 41 04, labeled "Switch".

      Again, I hope this helps.
