    Question:
Just bought an RZ4623. So far so good. I can't figure out why the engine hour meter only works when the blades are engaged. This makes no sense to me since I use the machine frequently for things other than mowing.

Hi Richard or is it ***,   :)

Sorry I know you have NEVER heard that before!  Believe it or not on most mowers the hour meter functions only when the PTO is engaged.  Notice I said most because there are a few manufacturers that allow the hour meter to run when the engine is on.  I could surmize that if you have a residential mower (ZTR or Tractor) that the amount of time when the blades aren't engaged would be considered negligible.  On the other hand I'm with you, I use my mowers for all kinds of functions from spraying, dethatching/sweeping even aeration.  Again maybe on an acre that's nothing, but hey, some of the folks in here have upwards of six acres and that would be a considerable time frame in my humble opinion.  P.S. I was able to purchase my mower at a HUGE discount because a customer thought the hour meter was defective and wasn't working when the engine was on!  Even the employees at Lowe's thought it was defective.  Until they got it back from the service center, it had 0.1 hours, the tech bill was $103 and nothing was wrong.  I am guilty of this too but KNOW more about your product than the customer!

      Hope this helps.
