    Question:
I purchased a 20" 450 Rancher chain saw from Lowe's in January 2014. In November 2014, I bought a new chain replacement for it ( chain type H30; DL-80, pitch- .325" and gauge- .050; file size 3/16")and it fit correctly. Yesterday, I purchased another Husqvarna chain from Lowe's with all the same dimensions and packaging which does not fit. I took the chain back along with the blade and packaging from the first chain to Lowe's. Everything on the new and old chain package was the same so we tried other chains incase the wrong one was placed in the one I bought. None of them fit correctly. When checking the chains, we noticed that the new 20" farm tough blades weren't as wide as the one that came with the saw and that the new chains fit correctly on it. My question is did Husqvarna change the blade and chain on these saws and will I need to purchase a new blade when replacing the chain? Thank you

What is stamp on your current bar tail?  It sounds like you got a .058 or .063 bar instead of a .050. You can determine the gauge yourself by using a set of feeler gauges. There three standard gauges that can be used .050, .058, and 063.

The problem dealing Lowes is that most times the sales rep has no idea how to determine a bar and chain specs that why I keep a chain measure tool at hand in the shop and usually like to have the customer bring in their bars. A good example is asking where the metric adjustable wrenches are; they will look for them even adjustable wrench fit both metrics and SAE bolts and nuts with the range of the tool.

Eugene thats a good one,  "Metric adjustable wrench",  I will have to remember that one. Lol

Kevin, We should be able to help you here, so as Eugene said "What is the Info on the tail of the bar, and if you are trying to figure out gauge, If a "dime"  fits in the groove, its probably a ( .050) gauge, and If a "penny" fits in the groove, than its an ( .058) , and if the groove is even wider than a penny its probably an ( .063).

Of course a regular gauge or feeler gauges work the best. If you need more Info, than please post it here.

Thanks Eugene and Karla. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It turns out that my brother-in-law had purchased and installed a new bar for the chainsaw after he had borrowed it for a few weeks. I discovered that it was the incorrect bar when I matched it up to the original one that I still had kept. Bought the correct bar and the new chain I bought previously fits like a charm. All is well now. Thanks again for your responses.

Glad you found the problem. Sounds like your brother in law was at least trying to do the right thing just didn't know that not just any bar would work. As long as he and you both learn something from this experience then not all is lost.

      Take care and operate safely.

      Kevin,

Hooray, Hooray and glad you figured out the problem. Yes - Bar and chains can be very confusing, there are just so many different ones, kinds, sizes, types, manufacturers, etc. etc. etc , It even gets my head spinning sometimes. There are lots and lots of individuals that ask bar and chain questions all the time.

Anyhow, glad you solved the problem.
