Walk Behind Lawn Mowers

I have a 700F walk behind lawn mower. The drive cable is broken and I see where a lot of people seem to have the same problem. I would prefer to remove the gears from the axel and make it a straight push mower. Now the wheels lock up and it is very hard to push without the self propell. How can I remove these gears or is there a chance the cable was under warranty?
