    Question:
    1. Why is the tool-less tensioner on my brand-new 440E inoperative? It is difficult to move either clockwise or counterclockwise.

    2. Why is the motor's idling too rough, with a tendency to stall, despite that I'm using the manufacturer's premixed Fuel + Oil (95 Octane Rating)?
    Details:

    Model:  440E 16" Gas-Powered Chainsaw

    Recently-purchased, brand-new.

      J. Doe,

A little bit of sawdust or dirt gets into the mechanism, and they then need to be clean and lubricated a little, I use an air compressor to thoroughly clean out the brake/ clutch cover, then a little spray WD-40 light oil, you don't need grease or a heavy oil since that will only trap and collect the dirt, even a dry lubricant might be better, once its thoroughly cleaned.

As far as it idling rough, If its still within warranty I would suggest a Husqvarna Dealer for a little Carb. tweaking, but also make sure you have been doing your maintenanace, and keeping the air filter clean too, since that will give you the same rough idle symptoms.

      I hope this helps,

i'm pretty sure the bar nuts need to be loose also.  not trying to be funny, because I have actually repaired saws for people that break a tensioner while attempting this with the bar nuts tightened.

      Robert, and J. Doe,

I have seen some chainsaws that look like there is "No" bar nut but there really is, and inside the mechanism, anyhow I agree with Robert. I worked on a chainsaw recently that one thumb wheel that you move with your thumb, and then a large ratchet type plastic knob. I am Not sure what is inside the cover of a Model 440 E toolless, but it sounds like it could be this kind of arrangement, I don't have a Model 440E toolless to look at either, but I'm almost sure I could figure it out from the IPL drawings. Some of the IPL drawings do not always give enough detail on the tooless brake/ clutch covers and it also maybe dificult to obtain the individual replacement parts like the plastic gear inside the mechanism, and I believe most of the time they want you to buy an entire new brake/clutch cover with the tooless mechanism.

Anyhow with all that said, J. Doe, the model of toolless that I recently repaired had the same symptoms as what you described. I dissassembled as much as I could of the mechaism, then thoroughly cleaned the mechanism for both the thumb wheel, and the plastic ratchet bar tightening knob. (Note: The thumb wheel you should be able to turn with your thumb relatively easily, on the one I repaired you could not, and the thumb wheel is the "tension adjustment" which uses a plastic gear) A piece of tree bark or wood chip will easily jam up the thumb wheel. So the only thing I can suggest is to thoroughly and after each use clean the Brake/Clutch toolless cover thoroughly. If the plastic gear gets damaged, you will have to replace the mechanism, Nothing to fix. Also the Large Plastic ratchet knob that tightens the bar nut which is captured  deep inside the plastic mechaism can easily get cross threadded, so you need to check the threads on the bar stud, and if they are damaged then either re-thread them with a thread die, or better yet just replace the bar bolt, and then you will also have to replace the plastic mechanism with the bar nut captured inside of it.

Oh, by the way - None of my Chainsaws have a toolless mechaism, just simply a screw for tensioning, and bar nuts for tightening the bar using a scrench/ combination tool, and its real easy too!

I hope this helps, If you need additional information please let me know and I can look at the IPL drawing.
