Question:
I have a early Model 44 Rancher Practica [SN 3441 021238] that has been in the family approx 38-39 years with limited original use and has been in storage for the last 30+ years. I have gone through the saw and cleaned it up and after adding fresh fuel, bar oil and spark plug, it started right up and runs great!
But I have noticed while bench running, it is putting a lot of bar oil on the chain which collects/drips around the clutch area and after shut down drips a lot of oil that pools on the bench at the bottom of the saw. On tear-down I did not see any adjustment for the oil pump when I had it out.
My questions are - is there a way to 'slow' down this oil flow, or is this the way this model is designed and any idea when was this saw manufactured?
Thanks for your assistance, Mike
Answer
Mike,
Beautiful looking chainsaw, you did a really nice job cleaning it up and keeping it in such great condition.
Probably the easiest way to reduce the oil from using so much, and dripping afterwards, Is using a different viscosity of bar chain oil which is a thicker or heavier oil. I am not sure what would have been the recommended bar chain oil 38-39 years ago, If you have the owners manual, you might check to see what was recommended years ago, and maybe it was a heavier oil. Bar chain oil sold today does come in a variety of manufacturers and types, and different viscosities, and some of todays bar chain oils are much thinner. Some of the cheaper bar chain oils are a little thicker, so maybe get a quart of a different oil, and try that oil.
I hope this helps !

Karla, thanks for the reply. I have been using the Husqvarna 'Bar & Chain Lubricants' product. I do have the Owner's Manual and it says "For lubricating the chain and guide bar we recommend a chain lubricating oil with good adhesive properties"

Should be an adjustment screw on the bottom near the clutch drum.

Hi Eugene,
Could not find any adjustment screw on this saw. My latest research indicates that my saw is a 1979 model [1st year introduced]and may not have adjustment for oil pump?

Thanks to all who responded to my questions. Now I have another question - where should I advertise to possibly sell our original 1979 Rancher?
